The situation for this species is under pressure for a couple of years worldwide. By huge catches of squid in the previous years, is the availability sharply decreased and the countries which are fishing for squids take measures to have availability in the future. Guidelines and checks on the catches is the key to preservation for the future, especially for a product like this which only has a lifespan of one year.

The Spanish manufacturing industry produces many products based on squid. For us it is the best-known product the Calamaris a la Romana – the breaded squid-rings which is deep fried. Despite the fact that only a limited proportion of this product cosists of actual squids, will the prices definitely go up in the upcoming future.

We hope that the new fishing season on Illex Squid in Argentina will be good, that would ease the market. The first signs are pretty positive, but that is no guarantee.
